Passaic County Jail Roster

The Passaic County Jail roster in New Jersey is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the county jail. PassaicCourt.us helps locate publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, information can be obtained through the official website of the Passaic County Sheriff, by phone, or in person at the facility's reception. The roster enables citizens to check the detention status of a specific individual, view the charges filed, and the date of admission. The responsibility for maintaining the roster lies with the Passaic County Sheriff's Office, and the data is updated as new admissions and releases are processed.

Search Current Inmates in Passaic Jail

There are several ways to find out if a specific person is being held at the Passaic County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to PassaicCourt.us and use the search form to find publicly available information about inmates.
  2. To check criminal cases that have already been filed in court, use the PROMIS/Gavel Public Access portal — it will show the status of the case in the Passaic County Superior Court.
  3. If the case is being heard in a municipal court, try the Municipal Court Case Search.
  4. Individuals transferred to the state correctional system can be found through the New Jersey Department of Corrections inmate search.

You will need the person's full legal name (last name and first name) for the search. The booking number, if known, significantly narrows the results. Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

By Phone

Call the jail directly and provide the person's full name. The operator will inform you if they are currently in custody.

In Person

Visit the Passaic County Jail lobby. Approach the public information window — the staff will check the roster on-site.

Find Passaic Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person undergoes the booking process at the jail. This document records:

  • the unique booking number
  • the date and time of booking
  • the charges filed
  • the arresting agency (specific municipal police, sheriff, etc.)
  • the basic identification data of the detainee

Online access to booking records in Passaic County is available through the inmate roster on the sheriff's website. If the case is already in the court proceedings stage, additional information is available through Find a Case on the NJ Courts portal. To obtain copies of court documents, including criminal division records, submit a request through the Superior Court Clerk's Office.

If you need a document not available in electronic databases, submit a request under the Open Public Records Act — OPRA. This mechanism obligates New Jersey public agencies to provide access to public records.

Search the Passaic Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Optionally, add the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one extra letter will exclude the desired record from the results.
  • Try spelling variations if the last name can be transliterated differently.
  • If the system allows partial matches, enter only the first few letters of the last name.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate identifier. It eliminates confusion with people having the same name. If a relative or attorney provided you with this number, use it.

What to Do if the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure the name is entered correctly — without extra spaces and with correct spelling.
  2. The person may have already been released or transferred to another facility. Call the jail for clarification.
  3. If the arrest occurred recently, the record may not yet appear in the system — there is a time lapse between the actual booking and its publication in the roster.
  4. Check if the person has been transferred to the state system: use the NJ Department of Corrections search.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Passaic

The Passaic County Jail roster is not updated instantly. There is usually a delay of several hours to one business day between the physical booking of a detainee and the appearance of the record in the online roster — this depends on staff workload and time of day.

Key limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay after booking. Night or weekend arrests may only appear the next business day.
  • Disappearance of records after release. The roster only displays those currently in custody. After release or transfer, the record is typically removed from the public list.
  • Not an archive. The roster is a snapshot of the current state, not a database of all past bookings. To obtain historical records, you need to submit a separate request through OPRA or contact the court clerk's office.
  • Input errors. Sometimes a last name may be recorded incorrectly during booking, complicating the search.
  • Confidential records. Juvenile cases, certain categories of protective orders, and records subject to a court order of non-disclosure are not published in the roster.

If you need information about a record that has already disappeared from the roster, contact Passaic County Jail at (973) 881-4600 or submit an official public records request. For records related to court cases, use the court records request form through the Superior Court Clerk's Office. Individuals whose records have been expunged will also not appear in any public database.
